Who Is RAW1?

RAW1 is me, Robert Andrew Winter.

Music has always been a part of my life, and honestly, I can't remember a time when it wasn’t. My grandpa was obsessed with classical music and had a very particular taste—he couldn’t stand repetition or the typical 4/4 beats. That sparked something in me early on, making me curious about how music could be so much more than the traditional stuff I heard on the radio. I started learning the piano as a kid, and it was clear that music was going to be a big part of my life.

My real introduction to music production happened on my mum’s friend’s Yamaha keyboard, which had the ability to record and layer tracks. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. From there, I moved on to a PlayStation with music creation software (kind of a weird mix, right?), and eventually ended up working with Cubase at school. I wasn’t quite sure where this was all going at the time, but the more I explored, the more hooked I became. I then got my first low-spec computer and started playing with Fruity Loops. That was the start of my deeper dive into production.

As my skills grew, so did my gear. I upgraded to a laptop with Cubase SX, then SX3, then 5 and eventually Cubase 8 and every version since—always going for the pro versions because I knew I wanted to take this seriously. EDM was huge in the 90s, and that era’s artists really shaped my early sound. I’ll never forget how it felt hearing my first compositions come to life—there was something so powerful about listening to your own creations that made me realize I’d found my path.

But let me tell you, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. In the beginning, I was hit with rejection, and the technology was way more complicated than I ever imagined. There were times when I had no clue how to use the software or plugins I was working with. But over the years, I learned to embrace those tough moments as part of the process. I accepted rejection, not as a failure, but as part of growing. I spent hours figuring out new tools, trying and failing, until I finally got it right. And it’s that learning curve that shaped me into the producer I am today.

Along the way, my journey took an interesting turn. I went to university to study foundation games design, and one of the modules was "Creative Media Project," where we had the freedom to create any type of media project. I decided to make a film score called Collision. It was one of the best pieces of praise I’d gotten to date, and the positive feedback from both my peers and professors made me realize that music production was where I truly wanted to focus my energy. That experience shifted my path, leading me to pursue a music production degree.

While I wasn’t able to continue with the degree beyond my first year due to life circumstances, I absolutely aced every module. During that time, I also earned my Pro Tools 101 certification. I didn’t stop there, though—I dove into other DAWs, learning Logic and Studio One along the way. At this point, I’m comfortable with pretty much any DAW. Even if it’s a new one to me, it doesn’t take long before I’ve mastered the software and am using it to its full potential.

One of the things I love about music is how much it’s shaped by the places and experiences around me. I’ve had the privilege of traveling to some amazing places—Spain, Amsterdam, Thailand, Canada, the USA, Cape Verde, Mexico, Greece—and each place left its own mark on my sound. It’s like the rhythm of each place becomes a part of you, and you bring that back with you. That’s one of the things I love most about music—it’s universal, but it’s also deeply personal.

These days, I’m always juggling multiple projects. Depending on my mood, I’ll switch between producing music, creating graphic designs, developing games in Unreal Engine, or sketching superheroes and ancient warriors. I’m never bored; creativity flows through everything I do, and I find that bouncing between different projects keeps me inspired.

At the end of the day, music is still my first love, and my studio is my home. It’s where I experiment, create, and push myself to new limits. I’m constantly evolving, and each new track is just one more step toward the sound I’ve been chasing all these years. And the best part? I’m not done yet.

Collaborator Feedback

"Bob is one of the most talented music producers I've ever met. He has an uncanny natural gift to be able to write incredible melodies off the cuff, across a diverse range of genres from dance to hip hop to filmscores. There's an infectious energy and enthusiasm he brings to the studio. You start a track not knowing where it's going to go but you know it's going to be good. It's an absolute joy to work with him."
